How to record your pastor's sermons...

Perhaps the easiest way to get your pastor's sermons recorded is to use a digital voice recorder. This is probably the easiest, fastest, and most economical method of getting sermons, or any audio of any kind, recorded to put up on the internet. This type of device is what we generally use to record classes and talks other than sermons.
Today's digital voice recorders are relatively inexpensive and because they are portable, they can record conveniently
in any setting (church, special meetings, open-air, etc). The recorded audio can be quickly uploaded to
a computer and then converted to the more commom (and smaller) MP3 format.

Summary of steps:
- Use a digital voice recorder with a lapel mic OR a line-in from your existing sound system to record.
- Transfer the audio as a WAV file to your computer using the supplied interface cable (usually USB).
- Use wav editing software to edit and clean up the file as needed. (One thing to keep in mind is that these digital recorders record to an already compressed wav file. Depending on the editing software used, you may have to convert wav to wav to a format the editor can handle - dbPowerAmp does this easily.)
- Use any tool to convert the WAV files to MP3 files (we use dbPowerAmp).
- The size of the MP3 file depends on the bitrate you use. The lower the bitrate the smaller the file. But keep in mind the lower bitrate also results in lower audio quality. On St. John's we generally use a variable bitrate set between 8 and 64kbps .

METHOD 2: EXTRACT SOUND FILE from a Video Recording
While requiring an investment, Ulead's Video Studio is an easy entry level tool for editing video recordings, extracting sound files and recoding video to share on the internet. |

This Hitachi DVD Camcorder records to DVD-Rom/RAM discs and is similar to one we use at St. John's with good results. more camcorders... |

Because we are sharing both audio and video versions of Fr. Jacob's sermons, we record direct to video using a digital camcorder. This not only produces a good quality video, but high quality audio (all things being equal). The trick is to extract a stand-alone audio file. Ulead Video Studio makes this easy, though there are other tools available that are not as expensive.
Summary of steps:
- Record your pastor's sermons on video. A digital camcorder works best for this as the files are easly uploaded to your computer.
- Use a sotware tool, such as Ulead Video Studio, to edit and convert an audio (wav) file.
- Convert the resulting wav file to MP3 with dbPowerAmp or your favorite converter.
- Post on your internet site.

METHOD 3: CONVERT EXISTING AUDIO .WAV FILES
The FREE dbPowerAmp tool can be used to quickly convert your existing WAV files to MP3 files. |
|
| |
If you are already have your sermons on the computer (in the WAV file format)
then this is the easiest method for you. You may already have these audio sermons on your own website or archival
and wish simply to share them on the internet.
All you need to do is convert your existing audio files to properly-encoded MP3 files. Click here for links to some tools that we are aware of
(for this type of straight encoding work, we recommend the FREE dbPowerAmp).
Summary of steps:
- Use any tool to convert your files from WAV to MP3, we use dbPowerAmp.
- Upload your files to your website.
